The Communications and Digital Ministry, led by Minister Fahmi Fadzil, will engage in discussions with relevant ministries and agencies concerning the regulatory aspects of TikTok Shop.
This comes after Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching met with TikTok representatives and gathered basic information about the platform’s demographics and products, according to Bernama.
Fahmi stressed the need for more detailed information and highlighted that different aspects of TikTok Shop fall under the jurisdiction of various ministries, such as the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry. The government aims to finalise its actions after thorough discussions.
In response to concerns from the public and complaints from large stores regarding price competition, Fahmi had expressed intentions to look into measures taken by the Indonesian government in banning e-commerce transactions on TikTok before coming up with appropriate actions.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) also had discussions with TikTok operators regarding restrictions on certain parties from going live on the platform, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue.
Fahmi said that despite receiving cooperation from TikTok, they have yet to appoint representatives in Malaysia, leading to delays and the government is actively exploring ways to enhance regulations in collaboration with relevant parties.
