In Sarawak’s digital infrastructure development, as of Q2 2023, 213 out of 864 planned telecom towers have been constructed under the National Digital Network (JENDELA) intiative.
Simultaneously, 3,689 out of 3,735 transmitters have been upgraded, and optical fibre access has been provided to 106,331 out of 207,135 premises.
Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching mentioned that 4G coverage in populated areas of Sarawak has reached 87.52%, according to Bernama’s news report.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has expanded internet access in remote areas with satellite technology, serving 523 locations through Broadband Wireless Access (BWA).
Completion of remaining initiatives is expected by the end of 2025. In the Igan parliamentary constituency, progress includes seven completed towers, upgraded transmitter stations, optical fibre connections for 619 out of 2,791 premises, and operational BWA service locations.
Challenges in expanding rural internet access include low population density, river access, and lack of electricity for tower use.
Phase 1 of the Point of Presence (PoP) project had 60 sites across Sarawak, with two completed in Igan.
Phase 2 involves 681 sites in Sarawak, with six completed so far, and the remaining projects expected to finish by October 31, 2025, including several in the Igan parliamentary constituency.
In the Igan parliamentary constituency, a total of 16 projects have been identified, and Teo said the contractors express confidence in completing several of these projects within the current year.
