While the rest of the people in Malaysia are already enjoying 5G, Maxis users are still waiting for their turn. However, it seems one minister was given special access to 5G.
The Star reports that the Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil showcased his 5G mobile test speed during the Jelajah Madani event in Tanjung Karang, Selangor (12 July). He tweeted: “Tonight in Kg Bukit Belimbing, Tg Karang, on the lecture stage, I tested 5G: speed of 692 Mbps!”.
However, Twitter users shifted their attention to Fahmi’s Internet provider, listed as “5G Maxis,” based on his Speedtest results. They began questioning if Maxis 5G was now available and speculated if it was exclusively for ministers.
In response to a user’s query about when Maxis started offering 5G and why it was not available to the public, the company stated that it would soon launch 5G-related products and services. However, Maxis has not yet commenced providing 5G services to users as they have yet to sign an access agreement with wholesale 5G network provider Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB).
Fahmi didn’t provide an answer as to how he was able to use 5G on the Maxis network, even though it is not available to the public yet.
Previously, Maxis conducted 5G service trials in selected areas of the country, with reports indicating that testing began in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan in December, according to local portal Amanz.
