Deputy Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup stated that the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is proactively fostering tech hubs in East Malaysia by delivering training, resources, and mentorship to emerging tech entrepreneurs.
He stressed that the ministry is engaging with local communities to comprehend their needs and to ensure that technological advancements benefit everyone inclusively, according to Bernama.
Arthur highlighted the substantial tech potential in Borneo that Malaysia has yet to fully explore, making it a priority to bridge the gap with Peninsular Malaysia.
He also pointed out that East Malaysia possesses valuable resources, including a significant coal deposit in Merit Pila, central Sarawak, and the Meliau basin in south-central Sabah.
Accordingly, he encouraged local entrepreneurs and startups to explore opportunities in the green energy sector, which holds considerable market potential.
Furthermore, Arthur stressed the significance of local support and infrastructure for startups to expand within Malaysia.
He mentioned that MOSTI has initiated various programs to strengthen the startup ecosystem, such as the Malaysia Startup Ecosystem Roadmap 2021-2030.
This roadmap outlines the vision and strategies for advancing science, technology, and innovation.
He also emphasised the ministry’s efforts to facilitate collaborations between startups and established industries, provide assistance in funding, digitisation, certification, and access to local and international markets, all while focusing on nurturing and upskilling tech talent.
