TikTok appears to be exploring ways to enhance the app’s profitability through the introduction of a subscription model that eliminates ads.
This strategy isn’t new in the realm of social media platforms. For instance, X (formerly known as Twitter) has already introduced its Premium options. However, for TikTok, this would mark a new subscription offering.
According to a report by Android Authority (AA), the most recent version of TikTok includes newly added lines of code that suggest the platform is in the process of testing a monthly subscription plan that would remove ads for its users.
AA identified a screen where users are presented with two distinct choices. The first is the standard option, which will remain free and feature personalized ads based on your activity. The second is the “Ad-free” option, which carries a price tag of USD4.99 (~RM23.60) per month.
At the time of writing, TikTok has not made an official announcement regarding this. It’s reasonable to assume that this is merely a trial phase, as it’s currently accessible to a limited user base.
Whether TikTok will eventually make this plan available to the public and potentially adjust the subscription fee based on feedback remains uncertain.
