Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz stated that the government will actively ensure that all income groups have access to electric vehicle (EV) ownership through targeted subsidies and financial assistance.

Simultaneously, the government is actively expanding and improving the country’s EV charging infrastructure.

He emphasised that their focus on inclusivity, in line with the Madani Economy Framework, remains steadfast as they approach Budget 2024, according to Bernama.

Zafrul highlighted that the implementation of policies and initiatives has positively impacted the local automotive industry, underscoring the government’s dedication to establishing a comprehensive EV ecosystem within the country.

The number of registered EVs surged to over 3,400 units in 2022 and exceeded 7,500 units by September 2023, marking a substantial increase from the previous annual average of 300 units.

Additionally, investments in the EV industry have reached an impressive RM26.2 billion from 2018 up to March of the current year.

Furthermore, he stressed the need for the EV policy to align with the recently launched New Energy Transition Roadmap 2030 (NETR 2030).

The minister emphasised that having a large number of EVs on the road would be futile if Malaysia doesn’t rapidly increase the use of Renewable Energy (RE) sources.

He noted that the NETR aims to expedite investments in grid infrastructure while offering incentives for RE development.

On a related note, Zafrul also highlighted that Tesla’s presence in Malaysia would enhance the EV ecosystem and bolster the nation’s potential as a regional EV production hub, likely attracting more investments in the sector.

He expressed that with Tesla’s presence, Malaysia is poised to accelerate its transition to EVs, anticipating a surge in technological advancements, research, and development in the EV sector.

He added, “We look forward to seeing more local talents being nurtured, more local businesses thriving in the EV supply chain, and more innovations that will put Malaysia on the global map of sustainable transportation”.
