In the near future, the Ipoh City Council intends to construct additional electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, particularly within areas of the city council’s jurisdiction that are popular and strategically located.

Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin stated that this initiative aims to draw more visitors to the city, particularly those who use EVs, according to Bernama’s news report.

Consequently, he revealed that the city council has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with telecommunications company XOX Bhd, which serves as the strategic technology partner tasked with enhancing current infrastructure and services through digitalisation.

Rumaizi explained, “MBI and XOX will identify suitable locations around Ipoh city, acknowledging the growing adoption of EVs in the country, including Ipoh, and will provide relevant services.”

Furthermore, Rumaizi emphasised that this collaboration extends beyond just the construction of EV charging stations; it also encompasses the improvement of other amenities, such as enhancing public transportation through digital electronic applications.

XOX’s Chief Executive Officer, Roy Ho, disclosed the company’s plan to gradually establish 50 to 200 EV charging stations in Ipoh.

He expressed, “If a popular area offers EV charging facilities, it will undoubtedly enhance its appeal to visitors. We will implement this in phases to ensure that not only outsiders but also the local Ipoh community can benefit from these facilities directly.”
