Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) Minister Chang Lih Kang emphasised that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) will not displace humans from the workforce; instead, they will generate new employment opportunities demanding advanced technological proficiencies.

He encouraged people to embrace the advent of technologies such as AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics without trepidation.

Chang asserted that technology wouldn’t supplant human jobs but would decrease the prevalence of labour-intensive tasks, according to Malay Mail.

He highlighted the burgeoning requirement for highly skilled professionals to manage AI systems, IoT devices, and sensors.

He also stressed a shift from the previous focus on traditional methods to a new educational approach integrating AI, coding, and robotics into the curriculum.

In view of this, the Ministry is dedicated to fostering interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) among students to produce a future workforce adept in advanced skills.

Consequently, a dedicated committee, consisting of representatives from the Education Ministry, Higher Education Ministry, and Human Resources Ministry, is being established to foster STEM enthusiasm among students.

Chang noted a decline of approximately 5% in students opting for STEM disciplines between 2017 and 2022.

He expressed wholehearted support for initiatives that promote interest in science, technology, and innovation (STI), such as those undertaken by Penang Tech Dome.

Additionally, he announced an allocation of RM100,000 to Penang Tech Dome to further its role in cultivating STI interest.
