Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has called on architects to ensure that their architectural plans for new buildings within the country incorporate provisions for adequate internet infrastructure.

He emphasised the significance of this step in alignment with the ongoing deployment of 5G technology, which is now accessible in Malaysia, according to a news report in Malay Mail.

Fahmi stated that he anticipates that numerous forthcoming buildings will be notably well-equipped. With the advent of 5G, these structures must be appropriately outfitted to fully harness the capabilities of the high-speed internet that Malaysia now possess.

He further stressed that this holds significance as he oversee matters related to the internet. Instances where certain buildings lack internet connectivity often lead to him being scrutinised and it’s a matter that warrants careful consideration.

Fahmi made these remarks during the conclusion of the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) Merdeka Weekend event on 20 August.

According to a study entitled “Internet Connectivity in Building Interiors: Architecture and Sustainability Considerations”, the authors stated that in order to build seamless internet connectivity, architects and RF (radio frequency) engineers need to work together to design building interiors that can handle seamless propagation of RF waves.

The authors also added that “The geometry of spaces, their spatial flow and materials, their partitions, and openings, all contribute to the flow of internet connectivity”.

So, if you notice that you aren’t getting a good signal inside your office building or at home, this is because it wasn’t built with internet connectivity in mind.
