The government has already introduced cheaper internet packages known as the Rahmah Package (formerly known as Pakej Perpaduan or Unity Package). But the packages are only available for the B40 income group, persons with disabilities (PWD), senior citizens, as well as army and police veterans.

Now, with the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP), Malaysians can look forward to cheaper internet plans very soon.

The Edge Malaysia reports that Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that internet prices are expected to decrease by this September with the adoption of the MSAP.

He stated that the implementation of MSAP will result in a reduction of internet wholesale prices and lead to more affordable packages.

Fahmi emphasised that the drop in internet prices will benefit consumers further, even if the prices are already considered reasonable.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) clarified that the reduction in retail prices for fixed broadband services, based on MSAP, can only be enforced after the access agreement is signed among service providers.

Currently, most access providers have either published or are in the process of publishing the Reference Access Offer (RAO).

To ensure wider internet access, the government will introduce a new policy called “where there is a road, there will be internet.” This initiative, developed by KKD and major telecommunication companies, will begin in areas with road access, including major roads.

Fahmi stressed the importance of improving basic 4G access across the country, considering internet connection is as vital as water and electricity.
