With the advancement of technology in the world, various things that were once considered impossible are now seen as easier to accomplish. In the past, all information had to be sought through printed materials such as books, magazines, newspapers, and so on.

Now, everything is at our fingertips with the existence of the Internet. Contacting loved ones in another country is not a problem with the availability of this convenience.

The latest development is Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, which can provide a representation of a situation or a person’s face, and it’s gaining widespread attention.

But in terms of Islam, what is the ruling on the use of AI technology?

Image-generating platforms using AI technology have now become a focus of attention because it is said that various attractive visuals can be produced by uploading text inputs.

As a result, a question related to AI was posed to the independent preacher, Ustaz Azhar Idrus, during one of his lecture sessions.

Through a video uploaded on Ustaz Azhar Idrus Official’s YouTube channel, he explained that the production of images using AI technology varies depending on the situation.

It’s permissible if:

  • Human portraits are made for good purposes such as promoting clothing businesses, including traditional garments (baju kurta), and so on.
  • The face of a prominent figure is depicted to commemorate their goodness and services.

However, the use of AI can be prohibited if the following situations occur:

  • Using the generated images for sinful purposes.
  • Depicting the face of a deceased individual in a disrespectful manner, causing sadness to their family members.
  • Causing slander and spreading disgraceful matters.

In conclusion, the production of images using AI technology is permissible if used for good purposes, such as for educational purposes. However, it is considered prohibited if used for mere amusement purposes.

In Islam, is it permissible to use ChatGPT to obtain information about any religious rulings (hukum-hakam) related to the religion?

According to the former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr. Zulkifli Al-Bakri, has clarified that ChatGPT is not suitable for use as a reference in the field of Islamic religion.
