What better way to enjoy the holidays than to stay home and play some of the best critically acclaimed video games that we have missed over the years.

And what better time to add those games to our collection than the Steam Annual Winter Sale!

This tempting yearly promotion is often an easy way to overspend, but we understand that money is tight, and the best games need not be expensive.

Here are our picks – in no particular order – for great games that can be had for under RM30 during the Steam Winter Slate – they make great gifts for that gamer in your life too.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

This critically acclaimed role-playing game may be over six years old, but it is still one of the best games money can buy.

It’s the game that is based on a series of books that the Netflix series starring Henry Cavill is based on.

Be warned though, this game contains violence and bad language.

Get the game for RM20.79, the Game of the Year Edition (includes three expansions) for RM25.80, or the whole The Witcher Trilogy for 26.94.

You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Hades

This game has won so many awards since it came out last year. It even won the first-ever Best Game Award from the Hugo Awards.

A must-have in any gamer’s collection, this indie gem lets you play as Zagreus, the son of Hades in his endless struggle to disobey his father and find the real story behind his existence.

It’s quite a bargain for RM28.60.

Outer Wilds

Those gaming outlets that didn’t give Hades their Game of the Year award gave it to Outer Wiled. Another looking game but this time, it is not a roguelike.

It is a unique interplanetary spanning adventure that happens within a time loop. Expect a lot of puzzles to solve and mysteries to uncover.

Outer Wilds was even named the Best Game at the 2020 BAFTA Games Awards.

You can buy this game during the sale for RM26.40.

Cuphead

If you like your games challenging, you’ll love this platformer from 2017. Although it is four years old and has an art style that looks even older, it is one of the most rewarding and beautifully made games out there.

Cuphead looks like a 1930’s cartoon because it was hand-drawn like a 1930’s cartoon and the result is glorious.

Again, this is a very difficult game and it’s only RM26.60

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Some call it an adventure platformer, some call it a mapformer, but most of us know this genre as Metroidvania.

This critically acclaimed game looks gorgeous with its hand-painted artwork and sounds amazing with its fully orchestrated original score.

It is also a lot of fun and a tear-jerker, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Get this masterpiece on its own for RM16.83 or bundled with Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition for RM26.40

Loop Hero

If you miss getting this game for free on the Epic Game Store, you can buy it on Steam during the sale for RM21.

It’s difficult to explain the game because there are so many components to it, but basically, it is an endless loop with a bit of deck building, strategy and city building, and a lot of lore.

You’ll have to play this game for yourself to understand how it plays.

Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator

In this unique puzzle game, you play as an alchemist, mixing potions for your customers. What makes this game unique is how it goes about visualising the process.

Every day you wake up and gather ingredients. Each ingredient moves the bottle on the map a certain way.

Like an adventurer, the bottle moves across the map to find potions. Get the bottle to line up with a potion marker on the map by adding ingredients, and you’ll make that potion.

Of course, more and more mechanics are added to the game as it progresses.

Currently, the game is in early access. That means you can play it now, but the developers are also still working on it.

It’s a fun game for RM25.60.

So that’s it, seven games for less than RM30 each. Any one of these games should keep you entertained over the holidays and beyond.
