The Oculus Quest is a virtual reality (VR) headset developed by Oculus, a division of Facebook, now known as Reality Labs. It was released in May 2019 and is the company’s first device to offer 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) tracking, allowing users to move around in virtual space and interact with the environment in a more natural way.
The Oculus Quest is a standalone device, meaning it does not require a computer or a gaming console to run. If you are still using it, we have bad and good news for you.
Meta just announced that they will no longer support Quest 1, its first VR headset. The company stated that it would not be releasing new features to the standalone VR headset in an email sent to the owners of the Quest 1. However, the company intends to keep releasing security updates and new software through 2024.
Owners of Quest 1 will still be able to use their headsets and apps, according to Meta. These users won’t be allowed to start or join parties anymore, though.
Additionally, starting on 5 March 2023, users of the original Quest will no longer have access to the social features offered on Meta Horizon Home. This covers inviting guests to your Meta Horizon Home as well as dropping by someone else’s.
Meta has released a few VR headsets such as Quest 2 in October 2020 and more recently, the Quest Pro for professionals and businesses in October 2022.
Even though Reality Labs lost more than USD 10 billion (RM 43.7 billion) a year, Meta is still placing its bets on VR and metaverse. The company is planning to announce Quest 3 in late 2023 and release it in early 2024.
