In the Klang Valley, users of the Rapid bus and rail services will soon have the opportunity to pay their fares using methods other than Touch ‘n Go (TNG), as the government plans to broaden the range of cashless payment options.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook revealed that Prasarana Malaysia Bhd is committed to introducing the open payment system for its services, according to The Edge Malaysia.
Initially, this will be rolled out for Rapid KL buses, with integration for rail services such as LRT and MRT stations to follow later due to additional time needed.
Presently, Rapid KL buses exclusively accept payments via Touch ‘n Go cards, while rail stations offer alternatives such as tokens.
Loke acknowledged the limitations of this system for both tourists and locals and emphasised the transition towards an open payment system, which would accept credit cards, debit cards, and other methods.
Loke mentioned that Prasarana has already commenced the tender process for this initiative, with expectations for it to conclude within the next two months.
Ideally, the implementation of the open payment system is targeted within the next three to six months. The goal is to have it operational, at least for Rapid KL buses, by the end of the year.
