The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) documented losses totaling RM1.34 billion in 33,234 cases of online crime from 1 January to 8 December 2023.

Bernama reports that, according to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, the figures were derived from NSRC records, compiled from reports submitted by victims through the 997 hotline.

Teo revealed that the losses encompassed six different modus operandi, with investment scams leading in losses at RM437 million, followed by e-commerce (RM383 million), telecommunications (RM334 million), e-finance (RM104 million), love scams (RM41 million), and non-existent loans (RM39 million).

“There is a noticeable increase in these figures. In comparison to 2022, losses amounted to RM804 million, but in 2023, this figure escalated to RM1.34 billion,” she stated.

Teo cautioned the public to remain vigilant and not easily succumb to the tactics employed by online crime syndicates, particularly in the realm of investments promising substantial returns.
