Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has urged telecommunication service providers to promptly address the problem of dropped mobile phone calls, particularly in Melaka.
He revealed that the issue was identified during a Cellular Service Quality Test (voice calls) conducted on a river cruise along Sungai Melaka in Banda Hilir, according to Bernama.
The test, performed by six mobile network service providers—CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, Unifi Mobile (TM Tech), Yes (YTL Communication), and Telekom Malaysia—revealed five dropped calls along the 4.5-kilometre route from the Hotel Casa del Rio jetty to Taman Pengkalan Rama.
Simultaneously, wireless broadband download speed tests were conducted, with an average speed exceeding 100Mbps for all providers.
Fahmi stated that the Communications Ministry will request service providers to submit reports on their corrective actions through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
He added that MCMC will monitor the situation throughout the first quarter of 2024 and provide regular reports to the Communications Ministry.
The minister emphasised that the test session aimed to enhance cellular service quality in Melaka, aligning with the state government’s initiative for Visit Melaka Year 2024.
This testing initiative in Melaka followed a similar session conducted from the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur to the Communications Ministry in Putrajaya on 9 January earlier this year.
