Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has suggested that Members of Parliament (MPs) who receive funds from the federal government should allocate resources to enhance broadband services in schools within their respective constituencies.

Fahmi cited his own example of allocating approximately RM1 million last year to improve broadband services in Lembah Pantai, according to Bernama.

He emphasised the importance of addressing connectivity issues in schools, especially in secondary schools, and encouraged MPs to use their allocations for initiatives such as installing internet infrastructure, particularly WiFi access points.

Fahmi urged MPs to focus on specific areas with urgent needs, prioritising those with a significant number of B40 students, and highlighted that the cost of improving broadband services in schools is generally moderate, ranging from RM30,000 to RM50,000 depending on the building’s structural layout.

Fahmi noted the slow process of waiting for allocations from the Education Ministry and suggested that MPs take proactive steps to identify pressing needs in their constituencies.

He also mentioned discussing the matter with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who expressed the need for assistance, presenting this approach as an effective way to address broadband issues in schools.
