The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is cautioning the public to be wary of suspicious calls from unidentified individuals posing as MCMC officers.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), MCMC has revealed that these deceptive calls, received as of 25 January 2024, total 259 complaints, with 238 inquiry calls made to verify related issues.
The callers employ a tactic aimed at misleading victims for specific purposes, issuing threats by alleging complaints against the victim’s phone line and accusing them of wrongdoing. Failure to comply with the provided instructions, as stated by MCMC, may result in the blocking or blacklisting of the victim’s line.
MCMC stressed that official announcements or information pertaining to the commission are typically disseminated through official channels such as email, websites, or the commission’s verified social media platforms.
Notably, MCMC and other authorities will not solicit personal banking details or information from individuals.
MCMC strongly advises the public to exercise caution, verify information properly, and refrain from disclosing personal details or transferring funds to unfamiliar accounts.
As a precautionary measure, individuals are encouraged to implement restrictions on their phone, such as blocking calls or creating a reject list. Additionally, MCMC suggests using software or applications such as Whoscall, to block incoming calls or SMS on personal phone lines.
To combat fraud, the public is urged to report any suspicious activity to the police or the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at the Hotline 997, operational from 8 am to 8 pm for further necessary action.
