Apple has faced challenges on its journey to create an in-house modem, and they have been doing it for years, but they still couldn’t crack it. It seems the company might be throwing in the towel and halting further development on this.

GSMArena reports that according to a new post on South Korean platform, Naver information from sources within the supply chain closely associated with Apple, Cupertino is currently restructuring its investments in the modem development department, signalling potential abandonment of the project.

This report is also corroborated by @Tech_Reve, known for accurate Apple-related leaks, confirming this shift in direction.

In September, Apple extended its 5G modem agreement with Qualcomm until 2026. All of Apple’s devices have utilised modems manufactured by Qualcomm thus far.

While the company initially aimed to transition to its in-house developed 5G modem by 2026, this goal now appears doubtful. Legal challenges also arose for Apple concerning modem patents held by Qualcomm, with an expiration date set for 2030.
