Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that Entity B, the second 5G network provider, will undergo similar governance requirements in the selection of vendors for its network hardware provisions.
She stressed the government’s stance that choosing vendors for 5G network hardware supply remains a commercial decision for the service provider company, similar to the approach taken by Entity A, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), which conducted an open tender and awarded the contract to Ericsson, according to Bernama.
Teo stated that the government has never imposed conditions on service provider companies for vendor selection, aligning with the open market policy.
In response to a query by Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin regarding the country’s 5G policy and Huawei’s involvement, Teo reiterated that the government continues to view vendor selection as a commercial decision by service providers.
She also mentioned that DNB’s role remains intact despite the shift in the 5G network implementation policy to a dual network model.
The government is evaluating the implications for DNB in light of this transition, ensuring that Bumiputera companies with contracts with DNB are unaffected, and contractual obligations will proceed as usual.
Teo further highlighted that the transition to the dual network model is progressing smoothly, with any initial issues resolved through discussions with stakeholders.
The government’s primary objective is to provide comprehensive 5G service coverage at an affordable price and promote widespread adoption of 5G technology among businesses.
