5G Coverage In Sabah Reaches Nearly 50% In Populated Areas

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil reported that the 5G network in Sabah had achieved almost 50% coverage of populated areas (COPA) by 30 September.

He also mentioned that 401 out of the planned 622 5G sites in Sabah had been successfully deployed, as reported by Bernama.

Furthermore, Fahmi provided an update on the 4G network, stating that 4G mobile broadband coverage had surpassed 90% in populated areas of Sabah, with an average mobile speed of 43.76 Mbps up to the second quarter of the current year.

He stated that out of the planned 4,281 transmitter stations to be upgraded to the 4G network, 4,229 had already been completed, while the remaining 52 stations were in the process of implementation.

Regarding the National Digital Network (JENDELA) project in Sabah, Fahmi expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the first phase of the project’s development.

He highlighted that 186 of the planned 631 new communication towers had been completed, and the remaining 445 were in the process of construction.

The JENDELA project, which comprises two development phases, is aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving the quality of internet services for the community, including education, healthcare, and economic purposes.

Fahmi also mentioned that a total of 118 PEDi facilities had been established and were operational in Sabah, with plans for an additional 14 new Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) to be set up.

These initiatives aim to empower the local community, especially in rural areas, and provide internet facilities to encourage online business activities through e-commerce platforms.
