Last month, we reported that the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had announced that the government would introduce a cyber security bill that would grant clear legal authority to the National Cybersecurity Agency (NACSA) to regulate and enforce cybersecurity laws. This bill is created to protect national security and the people in the digital realm.

The New Straits Times reports that the anticipated cyber security bill, expected to be presented before the end of the year, will also safeguards the courier sector, according to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fadzil emphasised the significance of this measure as consumers increasingly make digital purchases through various product categories and platforms. As reliance on digital systems, online transactions, and sensitive customer information grows, the need for cyber security becomes crucial.

While the industry has been actively implementing digital transformation, Fadzil urged industry players to seize opportunities to invest in advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, automation, and smart logistics. However, he acknowledged that the use of technology carries risks, such as data breaches, malware attacks, and phishing scams.

To ensure trust and maintain the industry’s smooth functioning, Fadzil stressed that data protection, operational integrity, and defense against cyber threats should be given the highest priority by industry participants.

In addition to the proposed legislation, the government is also considering amendments to the Data Protection Act and providing incentives for courier industry players to strengthen their defences against cyber threats. This includes the employment of data protection officers.
