Last week, we reported that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has announced that the National Cyber Security Committee has made a decision to promptly create a Cyber Security Bill. The Bill will grant clear legal authority to National Cybersecurity Agency (NACSA) to regulate and enforce cybersecurity laws, thereby enhancing its effectiveness.

Malay Mail reports that CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Amirudin Abdul Wahab supports this Bill, saying that the anticipated cyber security law aims to enhance enforcement and surveillance of cyber security issues by addressing current loopholes and eliminating redundancy in legal provisions. This comprehensive approach will fortify Malaysia’s cyber security ecosystem, ensuring improved protection for the nation’s security, peace, and prosperity.

According to CSM, the formulation of the Cyber Security Bill is crucial for Malaysia to address risks, reduce cyber threats, and combat cyber attacks. The bill demonstrates the government’s commitment to tackling cyber security problems and can facilitate enforcement actions against cyber crimes. It is not only effective in responding to cyber security incidents but also serves a proactive purpose by raising awareness among the public and organizations, thus enhancing the country’s preparedness and resilience against cyber attacks.

The CEO added that the bill is expected to assist organisations in identifying their cyber security needs and identifying gaps through the adoption of global guidelines and standards. To ensure compliance with the regulations, the proposed law should incorporate monitoring and auditing activities, particularly concerning critical national information infrastructure.

Additionally, the bill can enforce the certification of digital products to guarantee their adherence to cyber security features based on best practices and international guidelines. This certification process helps ensure the safety and integrity of digital products, making them less vulnerable to compromise, he said.
