Truecaller is an app that provides a comprehensive caller identification and spam blocking service. It’s designed to help users identify incoming calls from unknown numbers and filter out unwanted calls, including telemarketers, spam, and scam calls.

Truecaller maintains a vast global database of phone numbers and caller information, which is continually updated through user contributions and public sources. When an unknown call is received, Truecaller compares the incoming number with its database and displays the name or the identified information associated with the number on the user’s device.

Additionally, Truecaller offers features such as call blocking, call recording, and a community-based reporting system to help users protect themselves from unwanted and fraudulent calls.

Spam calls are a common occurrence to many WhatsApp users, this is why Truecaller is making its feature available for the most popular instant messaging app as well.

Reuters reports that Truecaller plans to expand its caller identification service beyond its app and make it accessible through popular messaging apps like WhatsApp.

This move aims to assist users in identifying and detecting potential spam calls even when they receive calls over the internet. The company’s CEO, Alan Mamedi, revealed that this feature is currently in the beta phase and is scheduled for a global release in May.

In another related news, back in early January 2023, the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) of Bukit Aman, the national police headquarters in Malaysia, announced a partnership with Whoscall, another screen caller app, to tackle online fraud.

The app can identify and block suspicious SMS messages as well by detecting dangerous links and keywords. Users can report phone numbers that they think may be associated with scams or suspicious activity, and they can also check numbers manually against the Whoscall database to identify potential threats.
