Apple has been using proprietary charging solution since the introduction of the first iPhone. They first started with a 30-Pin connector and eventually replaced it with the Lightning connector back in 2012.

Because of a European Union’s law that require most electronic devices to use USB-C starting autumn 2024, Apple have no choice but to ditched its Lightning cable in their next iPhone.

9to5Mac reports that according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, Apple plans to enhance the fast charging capabilities of the iPhone 15 models using USB-C technology. Presently, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models support up to 20W and 27W, respectively, for charging speeds.

This means that users can charge their iPhones faster if they have a compatible charger. However, since the company stopped including a charger with the iPhone, users must purchase a compatible charger separately.

Furthermore, faster charging speeds will only work with Apple-certified USB-C cables, according to Kuo, so users may not receive the full power output from their chargers if they use a non-certified cable.

It was reported that Apple would provide MFi (Made For iPhone) certification for USB-C cables and if the cables lacked such certification, they would have limited charging and data transfer speeds.

Kuo also reported that while the entire iPhone 15 lineup would have a USB-C port, only the Pro models would support USB 3.2 for faster data transfer speeds, while the regular iPhone 15 models would have slower USB 2.0.

Lastly, he expects that Apple will increase shipments of its 20W USB-C power adapter by up to 120% with the launch of the iPhone 15, as many users with old chargers will need to purchase a new one with a USB-C port.
