Former Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik launched a free online learning platform called “sophia” in hopes to revolutionize education.

This comes months after Maszlee announced himself free of political party ties and pledged to work less like a politician and more as an activist, saying that it would be more effective.

sophia is envisioned as a one-stop portal for the rakyat to gain access and produce educational content, free of charge – with more than 13,000 content available for primary and secondary learning subjects ranging from language, music, history, theology and science, in both English and Bahasa.

Our quick tour of the site shows a variety of educational videos and “flipped classroom” sessions made by local students, educators and extraordinary every-day Malaysians.

On social media, Maszlee explained that the Covid-19 pandemic had disrupted education for millions of youths across the country, where students and teachers were forced to adapt to online, at-home learning and major examinations such as the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), placed on hold.

Arguing the merits of the national public education program which he says is burdened by weaknesses, Maszlee noted that the pandemic presented an opportunity for Malaysia to rebuild our education system.

The world has changed, technology has changed. So society must change, education must change.
