The Communications Ministry has officially confirmed that mobile network operators (MNOs/ telcos) participating in Malaysia’s second 5G network will not pass any costs on to consumers.

This assurance comes as a relief to users who were concerned about potential price hikes following the rollout of the second 5G network.

Bernama reports that Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil emphasised that the MNOs have made firm commitments regarding consumer costs.

We have commitments from all of the (Telco) CEOs and there is no word on additional cost for consumers.

This is promised to me, and we hold to that promise.

Importantly, Fahmi clarified that implementing the dual-network model would not significantly impact the government’s finances.

This dual-network approach seeks to strike a balance between competition and sustainability, ensuring that consumers benefit without straining public resources.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been entrusted with selecting mobile network service providers to develop the country’s second 5G network.

The process, which began with the Application Information Package (AIP) on 1 July, aims to enhance connectivity for the people while maintaining healthy competition in the telecommunications sector.

In the meantime, if you are looking for an affordable 5G plan, we came up with a guide for it recently and you should take a look. There are plans ranging from RM30 per month up to RM45 per month that are friendly to your bank account.
