Yesterday, Sony released a beta update for the PS5 to select gamers in six countries, including several features that fans had requested, such as support for Discord voice chat and variable refresh rates (VRR) for 1440p resolution. They are also making a number of improvements to the social, UX, and accessibility features.

According to the PlayStation Blog, invited beta participants from the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany, and France will be able to try the new update before everyone else.

The biggest update is probably the integration of Discord into PS5. Players can talk to their friends and family via Discord voice chat even when they are on another gaming platforms.

The update also has several new features for friends. Screen sharing can now be done from a friend’s profile page, and party chats now have an icon to allow for easier joining. The game hub also displays mutual players who have played the same game.

VRR support for 1440p has been added to provide a smoother visual experience and will work with more HDMI displays after the PS5 beta update.

Managing the game list has also been improved with sorting and filtering options, including the ability to search specifically for PSVR 2 games. Sony has also made it easier to transfer PS4 saves to PS5.

Here’s how the saves transfer works according to Sony:

When you download or install a PS4 game on your PS5 console, a notification that PS4 saved data is available in your PlayStation Network cloud storage will appear (if your PS5 console doesn’t already have saved data for the game). Simply select the notification to download your saved data.

When you download or install a PS5 game that can load PS4 saved data, such as the PS5 version of a game that was also released on PS4, the same notification will appear (if the game supports this feature).

You can also transfer your PS5 data to another PS5 and this process doesn’t remove or modify the data on your original PS5 console.

They also made some screen reader improvements and players can use voice command to take recording of a gameplay. However, Sony stated that not all features might be included in the final update for all the players.

In another PS5 news, Sony just announced that they have sold over 32.1 million PS5 so far and they are planning to hit the 37 million target by the end fiscal year 2022 (March 2022 to March 2023).
