The Malaysian government is set to release comprehensive guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) across the nation.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced this initiative during a special chamber session in the Dewan Rakyat, according to Bernama.

The guidelines are being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Their primary goal is to promote the safe, reliable, and ethical deployment of AI technologies in Malaysia. By establishing clear principles and standards, the government aims to foster responsible AI practices.

As AI technology rapidly evolves, the government recognises the importance of providing a framework that ensures its responsible adoption.

Gobind clarified that there are no specific conditions for AI development, whether through open-source technologies or closed models like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini.

The government encourages research and development efforts across the spectrum, emphasising skill development and technological progress.

Looking ahead, the government plans to prioritise AI initiatives in the remaining years until 2025 and beyond. AI will play a crucial role in enhancing smart services and driving innovation across various sectors.

Why do we need guidelines for AI?

The guidelines are crucial for ensuring fairness, transparency, and respect for human rights throughout the AI lifecycle.

As AI becomes increasingly important to society, there’s a need for ethical boundaries in creating and implementing new AI tools.

By embedding ethical considerations into AI systems, we can prevent discrimination, build trust, and align with legal and ethical standards, promoting inclusive innovation.

So, whether it’s preventing misuse or potential harm, AI guidelines play a crucial role in shaping the responsible use of these emerging technologies.
