Phone scams are a common occurrence in Malaysia. Scammers often pretend to be government officials or representatives from banks and other financial institutions. They may ask for personal details, bank account numbers, passwords, and Transaction Authorisation Codes (TAC) from you.
People should never give out their personal information over the phone unless they are certain that the caller is legitimate.
Today, the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) tweeted to remind the public not to fall for any scam calls from strangers pretending to be an officer from MCMC tribunal.
MCMC stated that they don’t have a tribunal or any officers working for it. If MCMC wants to make an announcement, they will only do so through their official website or their social media accounts. The agency added that they will never call someone using a mobile phone number personally.
In Malaysia, under Act 574, Section 170 of the Penal Code, anyone caught impersonating a public servant will be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine or with both.
If you receive any calls from someone pretending to be an officer of MCMC, just hang up and ignore. You can also file a report to National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) by calling 997 or go to a police station near you.
