Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage are all AAA games that were ported and released on iOS recently in Apple’s effort to make iPhones and iPads a gaming platform on par with consoles.

These titles were chosen to showcase the powerful A17 Pro chip inside the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

But according to a report by mobilegamer.biz based on data gathered by Appfigures, AAA titles on iPhones and iPads have not achieved the level of success Apple might have anticipated.

Since its release on June 6, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage has garnered over 123,000 downloads. Yet, less than 3,000 users have purchased the full game at USD50 (~RM235). Additionally, the average daily downloads have now dropped below 3,000.

Capcom’s Resident Evil 4, released last December for iOS, is also facing challenges. The game has been downloaded by 357,000 users, but only 7,000 have paid USD30 (~RM141) for the full version, while Resident Evil Village has a mere 5,750 paying players.

Meanwhile, Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding has not yet generated enough downloads to register in Appfigures’ tracking data and this game costs USD40 (~RM188).

Analysts suggest that people favour simpler, more casual games on their mobile devices. The most popular mobile games often feature a unique art style and simpler gameplay that is well-suited for touch controls, says the report.

Besides that, even though the A17 Pro is a powerful chip, it’s still not powerful enough to provide a good gaming experience as shown by the videos below.

Triple-A titles typically require physical controls and larger screens for an optimal experience. Even the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s screen is just too small for serious Triple-A gaming.

That said, the porting of Triple-A games has set the stage for future iPhones to, hopefully, run all these games smoothly one day and set a new standard for mobile gaming.
