Social media, embraced by approximately 59.9% of the global population, or 4.8 billion individuals, has seamlessly woven into the fabric of our daily existence.

However, as attention spans dwindle, people commonly engage with a combination of approximately six to seven social media platforms, investing an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes in these virtual spaces.

In a bid to identify the social media platforms experiencing a decline in user interest, US-based TRG Datacentres scrutinised the nine most popular social media platforms, according to Mint.

The analysis focused on the frequency of searches for the phrase ‘how to delete (my) ___ account’ over the past 12 months, unveiling insights into the platforms losing favour among users.

TRG Datacentres’ findings revealed Instagram as the primary target for deletion, garnering over 1 million monthly searches for ‘how to delete (my) Instagram account’ in 2023. This amounts to approximately 12,500 searches per 100,000 people worldwide.

The authors of the study issued a stern warning to Instagram, acknowledging its impressive user base of 2 billion worldwide. Nonetheless, they cautioned that if a million users persist in seeking account deletion monthly, the ‘Instagrammable’ allure could dissipate, potentially reshaping its landscape within a year.

Snapchat, the preferred social media platform for the younger generation, secured the second spot on the deletion list, with around 130,000 individuals expressing an intent to delete their Snapchat accounts. This corresponds to roughly 1,600 searches per 100,000 people globally.
