Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change clarified that the private sector, not the government, spearheads the implementation of electric vehicle (EV) charging station projects, according to NST.
He emphasised that the government does not allocate funds or grant exclusive rights to any company for constructing EV charging stations.
The private sector, specifically businesses involved in the EV ecosystem, takes the lead in building and managing these stations.
Malaysia aims to establish 4,000 EV charging points in the current year, with a larger target of reaching 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025.
The nation is expecting to see EVs from Proton and Perodua in 2025 as well, with the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry expressing confidence that Malaysians will be able to drive locally produced EVs two years from now.
