Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the government, following discussions between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and tech giants like Google and Microsoft in San Francisco, will examine the necessity of implementing the data embassy concept, according to Bernama.

This concept involves establishing a data processing centre within the country, operated by companies from specific nations.

Fahmi emphasised the need for a comprehensive study to consider the country’s legal framework and data security, especially for Malaysians.

He acknowledged the concept’s appeal but stressed the importance of balancing it with ongoing legislative developments, such as the Cyber Security Bill and amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act and the Omnibus Act.

Additionally, Fahmi disclosed plans for a meeting to address matters related to the share subscription agreement (SSA) between Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and mobile network operators, aiming to finalise the SSA signing date soon.
