Samsung’s T9 Portable SSD marks the company’s debut with a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface, enabling the external drives to achieve 2,000MB/s sequential read and write speeds. This is double the speed of the previous T7 drive, which utilised a Gen 2×1 interface.

To maintain its high-speed performance, Samsung has equipped the drive with its “Dynamic Thermal Guard” technology, which effectively minimises slowdowns caused by thermal throttling during prolonged transfers. The drive’s exceptional speed allows you to transfer a 4GB file in just two seconds.

The Samsung T9 SSD is available in three capacities: 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. Physically, they share the same dimensions of 88 x 60 x 14mm and weigh 122g.

The exterior is designed with a unique pattern that provides a cloth-like texture. Despite its textile feel, the drive is remarkably durable, capable of withstanding drops from heights of up to 3m. It also operates within a temperature range of 0°C to 60°C and offers enhanced security through AES 256-bit hardware encryption.

While external storage devices are generally plug-and-play, the inclusion of the Samsung Magician 8.0 application offers additional benefits.

This app facilitates maintenance tasks such as firmware updates and health status checks. Moreover, it allows users to benchmark the drive’s performance and manage its security features. Samsung Magician is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android operating systems.

The T9 drive is bundled with two cables: USB C-to-C and USB A-to-C, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices.

This includes the recently released iPhone 15 series, which can benefit from the drive’s capabilities, although without access to Samsung Magician.

It’s worth noting that most commonly available USB-C cables may not be USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, limiting their ability to harness the SSD’s maximum speed.

Pricing and Availability

The Samsung Portable SSD T9 was already available to consumers globally on 3 October 2023. But Samsung didn’t provide local pricing or where you could get it.

The U.S. pricing for 1TB is USD140 (~RM660), 2TB retails for USD240 (~RM1,132), while the 4TB is priced at USD440 (~RM2,075).
