MIUI is a custom Android user interface developed and maintained by Xiaomi exclusively for its smartphones, tablets and other devices and it’s available in over 70 languages.
MIUI is known for its vibrant UI, diverse personalisation options, and useful features. The OS has achieved an impressive worldwide user community, there were 563.9 million monthly active users of MIUI in over 100 markets globally as of Q3, 2022, among them, over 422 million are located outside the Chinese mainland.
The most recent release, MIUI 14, was introduced in December of last year and it could be the last version bearing the name MIUI because a reliable tipster, Digital Chat Station, claims that Xiaomi will replace MIUI with an entirely new operating system called MiOS, according to GSMArena.
It remains uncertain whether MiOS will merely serve as another Android overlay UI, akin to MIUI, or if Xiaomi is actively in the process of developing an entirely new mobile operating system.
Earlier speculations indicate that Xiaomi is considering a path similar to Huawei’s, with plans to introduce its own Android Open Source Project (AOSP)-based operating system, which will extend across its smartphones, tablets, wearables, and electric vehicles.
Xiaomi has already secured the trademark for the name MiOS and the domain mios.cn within China. Additionally, there have been numerous reports within Chinese media about the circulation of a MiOS developer beta.
