Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil stressed the need for Malaysia to actively prioritise the development of a skills-based workforce ecosystem, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), to prepare individuals for careers in digital technology.

According to a report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), eight out of every 10 new job opportunities now demand digital technology proficiency, resulting in a nearly threefold increase in digital technology-based careers.

Fahmi stressed the critical significance of this preparation in enhancing individuals’ competencies and skills for their future careers and fostering an interest in STEM disciplines during their school years, as reported by Bernama.

He made these remarks during his speech at the conclusion of the #Mydigitalmaker 2023 Carnival event, underscoring the vital role played by the #Mydigitalmaker initiative in ensuring the availability of a skilled workforce in Malaysia.

The #Mydigitalmaker initiative, which is spearheaded by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and has been ongoing since 2016.

This initiative has already benefited approximately 2.5 million school students, offering them opportunities to engage in various digital technology-focused programs such as coding, drone technology, artificial intelligence, game development, and more.

Referring to “The Economic Impact of Generative AI: The Future of Work in Malaysia” report, Fahmi highlighted the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, specifically generative AI, to unlock the productive capacity of Malaysia’s economy, with the potential value estimated at up to USD113.4 billion (~RM535.5 billion).

Furthermore, AI has the capability to create high-income employment opportunities within the country.

Fahmi also pointed out that digital technology-based businesses currently contribute over half of the global economy, and in the coming decade, the digital economy is expected to generate 70% of all new value.
