The digital economy drives growth, jobs, innovation, and competitiveness. It connects businesses to global markets, empowers underserved populations, and improves government efficiency. Embracing digital transformation and investing in infrastructure and skills are vital for a country to thrive. If Malaysia wants to remain competitive and relevant for many years to come, we need step up our game.

FMT reports that according to Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister, the government is taking steps to establish Malaysia as the digital hub of Asia by implementing enhanced policies and laws in the areas of data and cybersecurity. These efforts include amending the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and carefully examining the Omnibus bill to ensure comprehensive digital policies.

Fahmi emphasised that these measures are crucial because Malaysia has become a favoured destination for foreign investors in the digital sector. Currently ranked 27th in the 2023 World Competitiveness Ranking, Malaysia has attracted attention from international companies and industry players seeking investment opportunities.

The minister expressed confidence that Malaysia can serve as a secure digital gateway to the Asian region, similar to its tourism slogan “Malaysia Truly Asia.” He suggested promoting the country as a digital gateway with a slogan like “Digital Malaysia: Malaysia Through To Asia.”

Additionally, Fahmi highlighted the importance of collaborating with other Southeast Asian countries to establish data-sharing protocols that address data sovereignty and portability. Such cooperation would strengthen the digital economy system of Malaysia and the region, ultimately leading to a prosperous digital era and positioning Malaysia as the Digital Tiger of Asia.
