A data breach is a security incident that results in the unauthorised access, disclosure, or theft of sensitive or confidential information. This can include personal identifying information, financial data, health records, or intellectual property.

Data breaches can have severe consequences for individuals and organisations, including financial losses, reputational damage, and legal liability. One such incident happened to a well-know credit management agency.

FMT reports that the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) has reported that personal information of around 20 customers, including their names and MyKad numbers, was published on the dark web following a breach in its IT system on 30 March.

The agency anticipates that the criminals may publish more customer information and they are collaborating with law enforcement agencies and other authorities, including the Communications and Digital Ministry and CyberSecurity Malaysia, in the ongoing investigation.

They added some operational systems will be temporarily taken offline to prevent further breaches, but services to customers will continue with minimal disruption.
