The first IMAX cinema in Malaysia was known as the DiGi Imax Theatre located in Berjaya Times Square and it was introduced back in December 2004. Ever since then, we have nine IMAX cinemas in Malaysia, with the majority of it located in the Klang Valley. All the IMAX cinemas here use digital projection that can project 2K resolution (2048×1080 pixels) and the projector uses xenon lamps. IMAX with laser is the next evolution of cinema projectors.
Just very recently, GSC announced via their Facebook, that they will be bringing in the IMAX state-of-the-art laser projector.
What is IMAX with laser? According to a Quora user, the projector uses a laser as its light source, capable of projecting 4K resolution (4096×2160), offering higher contrast and deeper colours compared to the standard IMAX digital projection.
You might have seen a laser projector in action at your working place or your home. But the IMAX version is significantly larger and more expensive.
Besides that, the sound system is getting an upgrade as well. IMAX said it also comes with 12-channel sound technology with new side and overheard channels that deliver greater dynamic range and precision for the ultimate in audio immersion.
GSC didn’t reveal anything more about it, but one Facebook user said it will be coming to IOI City Mall, which is located in Putrajaya. We will be keeping our eyes open for any announcements regarding this.
