The transition to the second 5G wholesale network in Malaysia is a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications landscape.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced that the selection of telecommunication operators (telcos) for the transition to the second 5G wholesale network is to be finalised by the end of the year, according to NST.
At the heart of this transition lies the Share Subscription Agreement (SSA). Gobind announced that the SSA has been signed and completed with four telcos, namely CelcomDigi Bhd (through Infranation Sdn Bhd), Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (via YTL Power International Bhd).
These agreements pave the way for equity stakes in Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), the entity responsible for implementing the 5G dual wholesale network.
However, Telekom Malaysia, the fifth telco, has until 21 August 2024, to secure shareholder approval for its SSA.
With the SSA completed, attention now shifts to the second stage. This phase involves critical decisions regarding network infrastructure.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) plays a pivotal role in this transition. Currently, the MCMC is actively exploring the process of moving towards the second network.
While no specific timeline has been set, Gobind expressed optimism that progress can be made before the year’s end. The MCMC will keep the public informed as the process unfolds.
MCMC has initiated the tender process to identify and select telcos for the development of the second network on 1 July 2024.
Implementing the second 5G network will enhance coverage, promote healthy competition, and ensure affordable and high-quality 5G service plans for the public.
