If you were having difficulty accessing the popular local online news site, Malaysiakini, you are not alone.
The news portal announced on X (formerly Twitter) that their main site went down earlier today due to “technical issues”.
The site claims that servers are unaffected and no customer data was stolen. Readers can still visit their site via an alternate domain: malaysiakini.com.my. For mobile users, you can visit: m.malaysiakini.com.my.
Malaysiakini didn’t provide further details as to what is really happening, but local tech site, Lowyat.net found out that the main site is experiencing DNS (Domain Name System) issue.
DNS is a critical component of the internet’s infrastructure. It functions like a phone book for the internet, translating human-friendly domain names (like www.example.com) into IP addresses (like 192.0.2.1) that computers use to identify each other on the network.
Lowyat.net reported that although DNS issues are typically resolved with ease, it has been found that the domain name was put on a “client hold” status.
This status indicates that the domain is temporarily deactivated and will not resolve until the issue causing the hold is addressed.
As of this writing, the main Malaysiakini site has become accessible again.
