At Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, Apple announced that they are finally stepping in the world of artificial intelligence with “Apple Intelligence“, developed by the company in collaboration with OpenAI.

It represents a significant leap forward in AI capabilities across various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Let’s dive into what Apple Intelligence can do:

Writing Tools

Apple Intelligence introduces intelligent Writing Tools powered by ChatGPT-4o that enhance your writing experience.

These tools are available virtually everywhere you write, even in third-party apps. Here’s what they offer:

  • Summarisation: Quickly summarize lengthy content, like an entire lecture or a group thread.
  • Proofreading and Rewriting: Craft the perfect text by iterating through different versions until the tone and wording are just right.
  • Priority Notifications: Get notified about important messages at the top of your stack, allowing you to focus on what matters most.

Apple added that users can access its services for free without an account, and ChatGPT subscribers have the option to link their accounts to use paid features directly within these experiences.

Expressive Visuals

Apple Intelligence isn’t just about text; it can also help you create visuals:

  • Image Playground: Create fun, original images within your apps. Describe an image, and Apple Intelligence will generate it based on suggested concepts and even a person from your Photos library.
  • Genmoji: Personalize your own unique Genmoji, adding a personal touch to your messages.
  • Custom Memory Movies: Describe a memory, and Apple Intelligence will create a custom movie based on your description.

Improved Siri Assistant

Apple Intelligence powers an enhanced Siri assistant, making it smarter and more context-aware. Expect quicker responses, better understanding, and improved task execution.

Privacy First

Apple is aiming to set a new standard for privacy in AI with Apple Intelligence. It draws on your personal context while ensuring that your data remains secure and private.

The company states that numerous features will operate on-device whenever feasible. However, for more complex requests that your device couldn’t handle locally, it will automatically route the inquiry to the cloud. The company claims that it will neither store nor access your data on its servers.

Additionally, the company has stated that independent experts will be permitted to inspect the code running on its servers to ensure privacy compliance.

When is it coming and on which devices?

The company said Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall (September – November).
