The Malaysian government’s official open data portal recently updated its vehicle registration database from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) allowing us to examine the current electric vehicle (EV) trends in Malaysia.

The data suggests that Malaysians favour Tesla and BYD for EVs. However, BYD has a competitive advantage due to its more affordable pricing, compelling Tesla to reduce its prices to stay competitive with BYD.

In Malaysia, the most affordable BYD model available is the Dolphin, with prices beginning at RM99,900. In contrast, the starting price for the most economical Tesla Model 3 is RM181,000.

In addition, the BYD Atto 3 has a starting price of RM149,800, which is significantly cheaper than Tesla Model 3.

Meanwhile, X user (formerly Twitter) Thevesh shared the data collected from the portal, showing that the top three EVs in Malaysia from January 2020 to April 2024 are the BYD Atto, followed by the Tesla Model 3, and lastly, the BMW iX.
