As Facebook is recovering from the DNS issue in one of their data centres, other applications are seeing surges of new users.

Telegram is known for reliability. It is a more robust app that has better support compared to WhatsApp but is rather shy in the spotlight. That is no longer the case.

While Facebook was offline for 6 hours, Telegram saw 70 Million new users. Telegram’s founder and CEO Pavel Durov described it as a “record increase in user registration and activity”.

I am proud of how our team handled the unprecedented growth because Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users

He added that the users in the Americas will experience slower speeds than usual because of the rush of new users.

Telegram was released back in 2013 and now has a monthly user count of roughly 500 Million.

Another messaging app that saw a spike in the number of new users was Signal. The company said that they saw “millions of new people” on their app.
