Malaysians Searched For The Weirdest Things in 2021

Google’s Year In Search 2021 lists the top search terms Malaysians used in nine categories.

Google recently released a list of most trending searches in Malaysia for 2021. The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) financial assistant i-Sinar and i-Citra came in as the top and fourth most searched term in Malaysia.

Google Malaysia’s Consumer Product Communications Manager, Nadia Khan said that this is because Malaysians were affected by the pandemic and were depending on financial assistance to survive.

Taking up the second and third spots in the general search category is the Euro 2021 football championship and Popcat, an online clicking meme based game that got the whole competing for first place.

In the educational category of educational searches, Google Classroom, Booklet — a classroom review game, and DELIMa KPM — the digital learning initiative, takes the top three spots.

Covid-19 get’s it’s own category. Most of the top searches are regarding the vaccine, like COVID Vaccine Near Me, and Semakan Vaksin. The people were also worried about the lockdown placing MCO 3.0 is in the top five search term in the category.

However, the most searched term in the Covid-19 category is CIMS 3.0 (Covid-19 Intelligent Management System). The same system that produced the letter which lets workers travel across district and state lines.

When it comes to sports, football dominates with Euro2021, The English Premier League, and Copa America taking three spots in the top five most searched term in this category.

In an upset, Olympics 2021 got in fourth and was beaten by the NBA.

Speaking of sports, athletes got their own category this year. Malaysian badminton player Lee Zii Jia took the top spot followed by cyclist Azizulhasni Awang. However, Danish footballer who has a cardiac arrest Christian Eriksen got in third, above gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, and badminton player Aaron Chia.

It is a mixed bag in the entertainment category. Although Squid Game and True Beauty — both K-Dramas — got the top two searches, Marvel’s Eternals got third followed by Takdir Yang Tertulis, a Malaysian drama series starring Alvin Chong.

Malaysians were also curious in 2021. The How to category hinted that a lot of Malaysians took up cooking, worried about the MySejahtera app, and find that Google Meet is tricky to use.

The top three search terms in this category were How many ounces are in a cup?, How do I Update MySejahtera? and How do I change the background in Google Meet?

Then things took a turn for the weird with How did Mr Krabs die? in number fourth slot followed by How late is the closest grocery store open? because MCO was a confusing time.
