Maxis, Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, recently unveiled its Maxis Mobile Identity solution, designed to deliver seamless, secure, and simplified authentication experiences for mobile users. The solution leverages a suite of advanced telco verification application programming interfaces (APIs), beginning with the Number Verify API.

The Number Verify API authenticates mobile devices by verifying that the provided phone number matches the one used on the device, based on real-time telco data. This ensures a simplified user experience, from app onboarding to password resets and logins, effectively replacing SMS-based one-time passwords (OTPs) or transaction authorisation codes (TACs).

Through this solution, mobile numbers can be securely verified against valid and active numbers in the background without requiring users to leave the platform. This creates a seamless and intuitive user journey. Additionally, the solution enhances security by reducing users’ exposure to scams and fraud through SMS verification. It is particularly suitable for customers of financial service providers such as banks and e-commerce platforms.

Maxis Mobile Identity was showcased at Smart Nation Expo 2024 in the presence of the Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo. Following the showcase, Maxis Business, the B2B arm of Maxis, is looking forward to collaborating with financial institutions, e-commerce platforms, and application developers to encourage greater adoption of advanced API solutions to enhance user experiences.

Prateek Pashine, Chief Enterprise Business Officer of Maxis, said:

“We are excited to explore the many possibilities enabled by telco APIs to further enhance customer experience. With this solution, we are not only simplifying the process for users but also safeguarding them against fraud and scams. We believe the adoption of API-based solutions will unlock greater possibilities for businesses and industries, enabling more seamless and secure digital interactions end-to-end.”

The Maxis Mobile Identity solution is built for interoperability and federation among operators. Maxis is partnering with Singtel for the regional federation of telco APIs, enabling network-based authentication for mobile subscribers. This partnership stems from the Bridge Alliance API Exchange (BAEx) initiative, endorsed by 13 leading telcos across Asia, including Maxis.

The solution aligns with the GSMA Open Gateway framework (CAMARA), a globally recognised initiative designed to provide universal access and ensure swift deployment and integration across different countries and mobile networks. This allows more service providers and end users to benefit from the solution. Additionally, the API’s interoperability with CAMARA’s framework and standards simplifies integration for developers, enabling the creation of more reliable, efficient, and secure mobile applications.
