Maxis, Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) are collaborating on the joint development of 5G solutions, leveraging Maxis’ network infrastructure and technology capabilities alongside UTAR’s expertise as a leading higher education institution.
The two organisations will explore commercially viable opportunities related to the deployment and utilisation of 5G solutions, focusing on innovation in the fields of healthcare and education. Beyond these sectors, joint solutions such as cybersecurity, green technology, and smart campus initiatives may also be developed using Maxis’ advanced network infrastructure.
In the healthcare field, potential 5G-enabled solutions may include remote surgery (telesurgery), advanced telemedicine, remote consultations, and real-time health monitoring. For education, solutions may be designed to enhance the learning experience through immersive environments and interactive content delivery.
For instance, 5G-enabled augmented reality (AR) applications could enable remote access and participation in lectures while enriching the learning experience through multimedia content integrated into real-world environments.
The collaboration was formalised at an MoU signing ceremony, with Ir. Prof. Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR President, and Prateek Pashine, Maxis Chief Enterprise Business Officer, representing their respective organisations.
Ir. Prof. Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR President, said:
“I am delighted that UTAR is collaborating with Maxis on this innovative journey to develop cutting-edge 5G solutions. This partnership aligns with UTAR’s commitment to fostering research and innovation that addresses critical needs in healthcare and education. By leveraging the combined strengths of academia and industry, we can co-create transformative solutions that contribute to technological advancements and societal progress.”
Prateek Pashine, Maxis Chief Enterprise Business Officer, said:
“Maxis is proud to collaborate with a like-minded partner in UTAR as we together explore the world of possibilities enabled by 5G technology. Through Maxis Business, we look forward to enabling 5G solutions that can transform healthcare delivery and education environments, making them more dynamic, accessible, and personalised.”
This collaboration builds on prior initiatives by Maxis Business, Maxis’ B2B arm, to drive greater adoption of 5G and 5G-Advanced solutions among businesses in Malaysia. Maxis Business remains committed to being the digital business partner of choice through its end-to-end connectivity and connectivity-plus solutions.
Previously, in 2019, UTAR selected Maxis to provide its campuses in Sungai Long and Kampar with high-speed Internet services. Through this collaboration, the campuses were equipped with Maxis’ connectivity solutions, enabling UTAR to scale their bandwidth seamlessly to much higher speeds.
