Three Malaysian recipients have been awarded Women in STEM scholarships under two programmes: the ASEAN-UK SAGE (Supporting the Advancement of Girls’ Education) Programme and the British Council Women in STEM Scholarships. These initiatives aim to address gender disparities in STEM education.
The ASEAN-UK SAGE Women in STEM Scholarships were available to women from all ASEAN Member States, including Malaysia, and Timor-Leste. Meanwhile, the British Council Women in STEM Scholarships were open to women from South Asia, East Asia, wider Europe, and the Americas.
Following a competitive selection process, three Malaysian women secured scholarships from the 24 awarded across ASEAN and Timor-Leste. These scholars were chosen for their academic achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to advancing the STEM field, where women remain underrepresented globally, making up only 29.2% of the STEM workforce.

The ASEAN-UK SAGE Programme, the UK’s flagship education programme in ASEAN, aims to improve foundational learning, support girls and marginalised groups in accessing education, and break down gender barriers in digital skills and employment. This year, 12 outstanding students were awarded the Women in STEM scholarships.
In its fourth year, the British Council Women in STEM Scholarships programme has awarded over 100 scholarships globally, with 12 scholars from ASEAN countries receiving them this year. This prestigious scholarship enables recipients to pursue a master’s degree or an Early Academic Fellowship at a UK university, advancing their careers in STEM fields.
The scholarships, funded by the UK Government through the ASEAN-UK SAGE Programme and developed by the British Council, will reopen in January 2025. Recipients will begin their studies in the UK from September 2024.
