The Malaysian government has been quick to introduce a range of digital solutions aimed at simplifying our lives.
From Digital IDs to myJPJ, the idea is to bring everything we need into the palm of our hands, making services more accessible and reducing bureaucracy.
In theory, it sounds like a dream come true – but in practice, these apps are less about convenience and more about constant glitches, frustrating delays, and the nagging sense that privacy might be compromised in the process.
The irony here is rich: we’ve been promised smoother processes, yet the reality often feels more like a technological mess. I’ve avoided using the Digital ID and apps like myJPJ not because I’m against progress, but because they just don’t work.
The Digital ID app, designed to carry all your personal information in one place, is plagued with bugs that leave users locked out, unable to access essential services when needed.
And when it does work, it feels more like a lottery than a reliable service. Meanwhile, myJPJ, the app for road tax renewals and driver’s licence management, crashes more than my old laptop.
The Problem with Digital IDs
The concept behind a Digital ID is appealing: one single identity for all services. But when the app crashes or refuses to recognise your identity, you’re left wondering why you even bothered. These apps are supposed to make life simpler, yet they often lead to more time wasted. The idea is to rely on a digital identity that can store everything, including your driver’s licence, but if it can’t even recognise my identity properly, how can I trust it to protect my sensitive data? If the system is glitchy when handling basic information, what’s to say it’s secure enough to manage more critical details?
myJPJ: The App That Can’t Even
On the other hand, we have myJPJ, which promises a digital solution to your road-related paperwork. Need to renew your driver’s licence or road tax? myJPJ’s got you covered. Or does it? More often than not, users report glitches that prevent them from completing even the simplest tasks. From crashes during renewal processes to issues verifying information, myJPJ has a habit of failing when it’s needed the most. But hey, at least it’s consistent – consistently unreliable.
The Privacy Paradox
The true irony, though, comes when you think about the bigger picture — privacy. These apps are supposed to make services more accessible while keeping our personal information safe. Yet with security flaws and constant glitches, you have to wonder if your data is really secure at all.
After all, if these apps can’t even get basic functions right, what makes anyone think they’re equipped to protect sensitive data from cyber threats?
Fix It Before You Roll It Out
It’s one thing to roll out a system with a few minor issues, but we’re not talking about an app that lets you order food – we’re talking about apps that store and process personal data. These systems are supposed to make life easier, not turn simple tasks into tech nightmares.
If our government apps are to be trusted, they need to work as intended. We need reliable, secure apps before we can even begin to imagine the convenience they promise.
This is based on my personal experience and opinion, shaped by the frustrations of using these systems.
